Matthew Henry

Matthew HenryMatthew Henry (1662-1714) a non-conformist minister and commentator was born at Broad Oak, near Bangor-Iscoed, Flintshire, Wales, on October 18, 1662.  For 25 years he pastored a Reformed Presbyterian congregation in Chester and in his later years pastored in Hackney, London.  Henry's comments for church Scripture readings were collected as his Commentary on the Whole Bible. This book is the best known work of its kind, strongly commended by Charles Spurgeon and George Whitefield. Whereas the Puritan Matthew Poole wrote a similar work for critical study, Henry's has a more devotional focus. He died on June 22, 1714.
