Baptist preacher and writer, John Bunyan (1628-1688) was born in
Elstow, England near Bedford where he spent most of his life. In 1647,
he married a young Christian woman who persuaded him to attend church
with her. After deep and prolonged soul struggle he made a complete
surrender to Christ and was converted. Bunyan soon began to preach,
but was imprisoned for preaching without receiving permission from the
established church. He remained there for twelve years, during
which time he wrote The Pilgrim's Progress. During the last
sixteen years of his life he was active in ministry to a multitude of
churches.
